Shadow Power

On a lovely West Coast day we were able to experiment with creating our own shadow art. We used our shadow and any other natural materials we could find to enhance our art work. We thought our shadow art looked great and Mrs Scott was really impressed with our creativeness. Awesome work, we nailed it.

Our Laundry Art

There is a Teacher's face book page and on this page there are some fabulous ideas that teachers share with one another. This is where Mrs Scott found the idea of the laundry art. On Friday this was one of the activities that we could choose.

Lest We Forget

On Friday we had an ANZAC service at school to remember all those who had lost their lives at war. Weka Tēina made a wreath that was laid by Emma, who was the youngest girl at school that day and Jack who was the eldest boy at our school. We made our wreath out of paper flowers that were left over from our Christmas Float last year. We used cardboard to glue our flowers onto and we cut out leaves to go around the edge of the wreath and around the circle in the middle. We were very proud of the wreath we made.

Our Portrait Art

We began our art work by completing the background to our portrait. We used marbles dipped in paint to create a background.

We put the photo of our face in a laminating pouch and using a vivid we drew over the main lines we could see in the photo on to the laminating pouch. The laminating pouch then had our marbled background placed in it and laminated. This is how they turned out..... When we reflected on our art works we found out that we really enjoyed painting the background of our portraits with the marbles. We think the portraits with the lighter background paint colours are easier to see and if we were to complete this activity again we would use this to improve our art works. We enjoy looking at our portraits and are proud of the work we have produced.

Weka Tēina's Picket Fence

We drew a picture of ourselves and put our pictures together to make a class picket fence. We coloured our portrait in crayon and then dyed the background so that the top half of our portrait looked like the sky background and the bottom half looked like the grass. Our portraits were then glued onto cardboard and paper place between each picket so that it looked like a fence. Mrs Scott added a whakatauki that reflects what we need to do in our learning space so that we can be the best learners we can be.

Our Easter Eggs made from nature

Today each of us in Weka and Weka Tēina made a natural easter egg using things we found in our school environment. We chose different materials to decorate our egg. Some of the materials we collected in our school environment that we used were harakeke, stones, leaves, flowers, twigs, grass, bark, berries and seed pods.

These are the eggs that Weka Tēina created.

When we shared our eggs with each other when they were completed we thought our eggs looked great. We thought they looked surprising, creative and some looked a little like a garden. We are very proud of our creations. Happy Easter everyone!!

Matariki Art

 We completed some art work for Matariki.  We made the stars in the sky, ripped paper to make the Southern Alps and used chalk pastels to show the Southern Lights in the night sky during winter time. We then put on our Matariki star cluster. In our class we enjoy making art work. Some parts were a little tricky and we had to show our patience - especially when we were ripping the paper in the shape of the mountains and when we were cutting out the Matariki star cluster. 

 We did think our art work turned out really well and we were very proud of what we had achieved. Ka pai Wēka Teina - awesome work!!

Our Frozen Mid Winter Christmas Tree

Every year the Hokitika Lions Club run a mid winter Christmas tree display to raise money for a community project. This year the theme was 'Frozen' so Ruma Weka Teina's teacher, Mrs Scott, thought they should use the theme 'Frozen in time - Lockdown'. The children made cubes showing what they enjoyed about learning online and then they used the iPads to take photos of each other, frozen, like they sometimes looked on their class meets. It was a lot of fun making all the decorations and their tree looked amazing in the display.
