Using breathing to help us with our zones of regulation

We have been learning about some different breathing when our body engines our beginning to speed up or running too fast. 'Whale breathing' really helps us when we are angry or in the red zone and 'Snake Breathing' can help to slow our engine down when we are in the yellow zone.

We can go and practise this breathing when we need to now because we have a QR code that we can scan on our iPads.  On Friday we practised using these.

We are going to add some more breathing to our other zones as well.

When David came to Weka Tēina

We read the book when 'David Goes to school.'

David Goes to School by David Shannon

We made a picture of David and gave him a striped t-shirt just like he was in the book.  Then we thought about what things in our classroom were really important that David would need to know if he was a member of Weka Tēina. We are going to be focussing on each of these things in our class so that we all know what these look like, sound like and feel like. We will share them on our BLOG when we cover each one.

Look at our awesome David's. Well done Weka Tēina, you did a fabulous job.

We've been carrying on with our sound learning at home

Each week when we learn a new sound we have been searching for something at home that starts with this sound and taking a photo of it. We have put our photos together into a pic collage that we keep on our sound wall.

Great searching Weka Tēina, you are taking some awesome photos.

Our body is like an engine

We have been learning about how our body is like an engine.  Sometimes our engine runs fast, sometimes it runs slow and sometimes our engine runs just right.

We use colours to show how our engine is running. Blue is slow, Green is just right, Yellow means our engine is starting to speed up and Red means our engine is running too fast.

Different feelings and emotions change the speed of our engine. Sometimes they change to different speeds for different people.

Today we played Bingo.  It was lots of fun. Joy modelled an emotion and we had to guess what it was and then see if it was on our bingo board.

We used a colour dinosaur as a counter. We used the colour dinosaur that would match how our body engine would be running.

Then we used our own marker to show how our body engine was running at the time.

We had lots of fun today. We can look at the wall in our learning space to help us sort some of our emotions. We are going to be looking at ways to help our body engine when the engine speed is not where we need it to be. We will share our ideas with you.

Making Milo Monkey biscuits

We met Milo monkey as part of our phonics programme. Milo loves munching on muffins.  Milo monkey is helping us to learn the m sound.

To finish off our week working on the m sound we made monkey biscuits. We were going to use round biscuits for Milo's face but unfortunately every biscuit in the packet was broken.😢

After some quick thinking we solved the problem. We iced the biscuits and decorated Milo's face.

We think Milo would like munching on his marvellous Milo faces.

Our 1st swimming session finally arrived

We were so excited for our 1st swimming session to finally arrive. We were both excited about the bus ride to and from the pool and swimming as well.  This is what we enjoyed.

Angus said "I liked wearing Jasper's googles to go underwater."

Sienna said "I liked going to the swimming pool and the bus ride."

Jasper said "I liked Tasman's dad teaching me and I liked ducking under the water."

Maisy said "I liked Finnian's mum teaching me."  Maisy is underwater looking at how many fingers Kelly is holding up.

Emma said "I liked putting my whole head under the water."

Logan said "I liked going underwater and blowing bubbles."

We've solved the problem of finding our sun hats

It was really hard for some of us to find our own sunhat before we went out to play and lunch as alot of our hats all looked the same.

Yipee we have come up with a way to recognise our own hats quickly - we all have our very own button so that we know exactly which one is ours. Ka pai Weka Tēina - great problem solving. Can you spot our buttons? Maybe you can see a ladybug, spider, frog or turtle.

We're excited and ready for our 2021 Learning Journey

How exciting, our 1st day at school for 2021. We are all excited and ready to learn and practise all the great values we have at Kaniere School.  We all look super grown up in our uniforms too. Welcome to Weka Tēina, we are going to have a great year.

Today we also set up our Magic Learning Carpets. These are going to really help us to be the best learners we can be. Our teacher Mrs Scott said when we are doing all the right things on our Magic Carpets the magic will begin.  We can't wait and either can she!!

Here we are finding the letters to name our Magic Carpets
